I saw there was a Monsters + Mysteries episodes partially on this, so I did some research on it, and this road is totally crazy. It seems even crazier than the one in New Jersey. What really strikes me about this road are the demon dogs, and the time loss where people go missing and show up days or hours later not knowing where they had been.
I personally, based on the little amount of research and my opinions on the paranormals, believe that there is probably some paranormal activity on the road, but the majority of what happens is that people go to the road looking to see something. So, when they see something that is probably completely normal, they just sort of invent it up in their mind and decide that it is "paranormal".
What do you all think of this road? Real or just a good story?
There are several roads with the numbers 666, a couple in Pennsylvania. Although I'd rather not live with such an address, it's really just the number after 665 and only a certain type of religion believes there's anything to it. I don't think that paranormal activity is concentrated on a place because of the physical address.

Oh, Utah demon dogs... They're the worst. If I lived near such a place, I'd enjoy a good story like that. Actually, David. You live near Lafayette Cemetery. Now that's an address!

Many highway deaths on route-666 in NM; most due to intoxicated Native Americans. It could be that the geology of the region captured some of their physic energy--much like Gettysburg.
This is just a hair-brained, but it sounds as good as any.

Yes. And the city of Gallup have known this for some time but things have been changing somewhat. I've been on this road (now US 491) several times as baseball preseason games will crank up soon and I like to go down to Phoenix by way of Gallup. 491 has been seeing four lane construction lately, it would be nice to see that entire route from Shiprock four laned but there is still a long ways to go. The last few times I've stayed in Gallup for the night I've very much enjoyed my stay there!
You don't have the DUI issues from Shiprock to Cortez even though there's a casino on the Colorado side of the border. And certainly not from Cortez to Monticello, Utah. Mostly ranching and semi truck traffic through this way. It's the quickest route to take from the four corners area to Salt Lake City.
I have a friend who works for the highway dept. He said it seemed to be a weekly thing to see the U.S. 666 highway signs swiped from time to time. And it costs money to have road workers continuously go out to those areas to put up the signs only to have them stolen the next week And also the workers have enough to do regarding road maintenance itself .But it was my understanding religious groups in New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah had been pushing for the number change for years.
HIGHWAY 666 runs through Shiprock New Mexico, to Gallop, New Mexico. It is a 200 mile long stretch of road that runs from Utah to New Mexico through southwestern Colorado. It used to run into Arizona but it was decided to rename it Highway 191 after complaints from motorists of "unusual events", sighting of unknown aircraft, "strange "people" or "strange human shape things walking the highway" that cars were able to drive through, with no apparent harm to "whatever" was out walking about. Refer to "Haunted America".
