'Werewolves' are an age old myth about men or women turning into wolves -- human sized wolves. At the turning of the full moon. There was a lot of fear surrounding wolves and the vileness and most base of human nature, and people sought ways to protect themselves and explain atrocities.

But werewolves aren't real.

Werewolves are just a myth. I hope. If I see one hopefully Kate Beckinsdale is around at the same time to beat down the beast and prevent me from becoming lunch.

Here are some interesting speculations on the origin of the myth:

That's a decent article, but it's only a tiny slice of the werewolf myth. Shapeshifting goes back to prehistoric times, LOOOOONG before Ovid.

The best book I've ever found on the subject is The Beast Within by Douglas Adams (not the same guy who wrote the Hitchhiker's Guides). He reviews the entire background of the werewolf myth, from the most ancient archaeological findings up through the Middle Ages, modern psychology, and movies.

where do people get this crap, that they are real?? how could a cross breed ever exist?? that's the problem in society today, the lines of realism are blurred

now bigfoot, on the other hand , is a whole different story

I'm actually not sure if the OP was really talking about werewolves or if he was using the term werewolves instead of wolves. IN rereading the original post, it seems as if he talking about wolves, and the other respondents responded as if it were wolves, too, before it got moved to here because he used the term werewolves.

Other than that -- I got nothin'.

Here's what the OP said in summary: "i'm not crazy about the werewolf concept because it vilifies the wolf, which is a predator just being itself. Unlike we humans. [I think his/her point here is that the wolf's innocence is sullied by overlaying it with human lust for blood] Plus, one species transforming into another is BS".

Unless I missed it, I don't see anyone in this thread claiming they're "real". Including the OP.

It goes back to prehistoric times. Humans started moving up into Europe and the ice started moving down into Europe. Food got scarce. Humans used to eating fruits and grains had to learn to hunt animals for food. And all those animals were much faster and fiercer than humans, so killing them wasn't easy.

Humans started watching other tribes that could hunt and feed their families off the herds. But those tribes were wolves. Humans learned to hunt by watching wolves, and eventually tamed wolves into dogs.

Because killing isn't easy and is very dangerous, the hunting rite soon became very incorporated into ancient religions, so that the hunters "became" wolves (metaphorically speaking) for the hunt. Ever seen those paintings of Native Americans wearing wolfskins as they stalked the buffalo? Same concept.

Now, people being "cursed" and howling at the moon and turning into a ravening beast? That's all Freud and Hollywood.

i made this thread during a rant, you people have turned it into a walk in the park with an icecream..goodlord

yes i do respect wolves and all other creatures and i think it's not fair that wolves have been vilified as they have been, but come now, there needed to be some evil in this thread

course these days i guess theres enough true proper evil occurring, not even to need monsters, humans are tending to it nicely themselves
