You know that dream, where you desperately trying to shoot and no matter how hard you pull on the trigger, it just won't fire. Or perhaps the bullets just fall out of the gun, don't go the distance.

I have heard that the reason for this is that basically, we are good people. The reluctance of killing another is so strong that in such dreams it generates the impossible situation of shooting someone.

But what if there is another reason, something more direct, something more technical?

I just watched an advertisement for "Senora Acero" Señora Acero (TV Series 2014
where she is threatening someone at gun point, her finger inside the guard and on the trigger.

SIGH, such is "Hollywood" where there is no possibility of the gun going off but if one were to do that in reality, we-ll..........................................

Knowing those technical details, about the proper way to hold a gun until one is ready to shoot......and seeing these misconceptions on TV, in the movies, year after year, could that be generating these dreams?

Personally, I like to believe the reluctance theory more. On the other hand, however................................

Most likely these dreams are symbolic of our fears of being ineffective in the face of threats to our well being or success. It's the kind of dream you'd have before a test, if you were afraid of failing the test.

Actually, in one of my dreams like that, it took a chilling twist.

I was chasing down a sniper, couldn't shoot him, and a voice in the dream said the reason stated above was the why.

So then, I slightly exited the dream (like the Arch in ST:TNG), reprogrammed the dream, got back into it....and no more sniper!

It's gotta be a common dream for those who've carried gun for living. Mine are always gun jams or bullets that leave the barrel at about 2 FPS and go downhill from there.

I HATE those dreams!

As it goes, I only play one video game, UT2004 and then most often, Deathmatch. I have had dreams of that game but they have been more of the background and the play than the actual this or that weapon. The dreams happen infrequently.....but they do happen.

I don't recall if I had the heavy trigger pull dreams before I got into police work, but have certainly had them afterwards even though my active police days are far, far over.

As far as any other kind of weapon. Once, Freddie Krueger turned up in my dreams...........I put a Great Sword through him.

Just another variety of the very, very common "Obstacle Dream". Same meaning as a dream in which--phone won't work or car won't start or can't find your clothes or can't find wallet . . .

No specific significance to the firearm.

It seems every dream I have where I am firing a weapon, the trigger doesn't pull no matter how hard I try. Dreams of random situations and dreams of my time in the desert.. Weapon never fires :/

Whether you can't pull the trigger or can't run away or walking seems like slogging through heavy water, you try to speak or scream and can't... these are all associated with sleep paralysis.
You can find many articles on the phenomenon.

holy crap...not just me
I have dreams where the trigger pulls very easily but nothing happens...it is trying to catch on something, but the mechanism is broken....every now and then it will fire but the bullet has no affect on whomever I shoot

also, dreams where I am in a fist fight, and just pummeling someone...to NO affect...no bruising or bleeding, the punches do nothing

or I am superhero, but my powers wont work...I try to fly and jump up to just fall back down

these have been explained as typical dreams of inadequacy that everyone has from time to time...I haven't had one in a long time, but used to quite a bit
