Or maybe all four actually heard a voice call "help!" and they actually acted upon it because they know what a voice calling "help!" sounds like. All four of these police officers are in a line of work where they have to accurately interpret what they hear. I highly doubt any of them go running around responding to "voices" they think they hear -- if they did they would have been deemed incompetent and would probably be in an institution or on the streets. It's easy to be a skeptic because all one has to do is make up explanations. If it was only one, that wouldn't be good enough, because the other three didn't hear it. But if it was two of them -- that also wouln't "prove" anything because the skeptic says what about the other two? But all four heard it, but still that's not good enough. Give me a break.
I'm generally of the opinion that there must be a rational explanation to anything that occurs, or that is witnessed by one or a number of people, even if we never find out what that explanation may be.
That said, though, I'd never say "never" when it comes to supernatural or paranormal events that we can't rationalize or understand. I just figure there's so much out there that our limited human capacities can't know or understand. So just because I don't understand it, may not believe it, it doesn't mean, IMO that it's not possible.
So with this story, I'd just settle for believing that these four rescuers believed they heard a voice, but its source can't be verified. Doesn't mean, IMO, it didn't happen, and I'm just happy that whether or not that voice played a role in the rescue of this baby, I'm glad they were able to rescue her, and she's doing ok.
Who's to say it wasn't the baby? The article indicated she was 18th months. Here's what WebMD has to say:
Baby talk at 18 months. Babies at this age say up to 10 simple words and can point to people, objects, and body parts you name for them. They repeat words or sounds they hear you say, like the last word in a sentence.
____
She could have heard her mother calling for help and started repeating it. The capsized car and river could have distorted the tone and volume...just a theory.
The article I read said from the way she went over the bridge, mother was dead at impact. She hit the barrier, went up and over, the car twirled and landed on the roof. She may have fallen asleep while driving.
I know when I vacuum with earplugs, I hear music often. I can dance to it. It's not there. It's my brain making sense out of the vacuuming and my ears tinnitus.
My thinking is that the rush of the water, and the knowledge that someone was in the car, their brains did the same thing -- took various normal noises and made them into cries for help.
Both my wife and myself sincerely believe that God was watching over the accident and foreknew that it was going to happen. He was watching over them. The baby's mother died in the accident but God saved its life. He sent an Angel and caused the firemen to hear an audible voice, "Help Me", and they heard it. There is no other way for them to having hear anything else. It was of no imagination of any kind.

A false theory. The baby was unconscious and the officers wouldn't have had to turn the car over if there was no voice. They saw an arm and the car was upside down so the first response would have been "there are no survivors".
I personally don't know how a child is suppose to talk while unconscious

good response--apparently some refuse to believe in help from the other side be it the mother or a gaurdian angel

Guess that was "Make an Orphan Day"...god's day for just saving babies, huh?

You would hear my voice too if I was dead in a car and my baby was still alive (barely) clinging to life after 14 hours with no one in sight. I can do this voice to brain thing too, and am very much alive. I think the responders deserve a superior recognition! It's too bad about the mother though- no drugs or alcohol. No skid marks. She either fell asleep, or it could have been something to do with her heart. If it was mechanical failure, it was the brake system. ( which I highly doubt)

The child was unconscious when they found her, but who's to say when she lost consciousness. A few minutes before they actually approached the car or seconds? The same question could be posed for the deceased mom. Slowed heart-rate from the icy temperatures, slipping in and out of consciousness and then succumbing to the cold. Let's also be clear, the article said she *likely* died on impact, but that's not confirmed. Either of these scenarios is just as possible as a "voice from beyond", if not more so...
Personally I hope they investigate this accident more, especially since there were no skidmarks found.
What cracks me up is the posters who get upset when an alternate theory is kicked around. I don't have take every story that comes across my screen, hook line and sinker, to believe in the possibility of paranormal or otherworldly activity.
Out of all the scenarios I've heard, Tallysmom put forth the most plausible one in my book.
