Break given. I stand by what I said. I have zero reason to think that humanity's major institutions would have serious trouble adapting to the knowledge that we aren't alone in the universe.

Well, what major religions here on earth could readily assimilate that knowledge? To most, we humans are the chosen favorites in a universe overseen by gods who are human in form & mannerisms. How long would they last if & when a bunch of aliens show up who state "Oh btw sillies - none of your human deities actually exist"? What if the aliens have no gods; or superior non-humanoid god/gods that actually exist and manifest themselves? Who's gonna listen to the Pope when Xenu's making his round-the-world debut tour?

All the major ones --- Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism would have no trouble working extraterrestrial life into their theology. Some of the more fundamentalist sects might have trouble, but they're still having trouble with the Earth revolving around the sun. They are a minority, and I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about them.

All due respect, but I think you maybe need to stop basing your opinions on religion on the kooks on TV and actually do some reading.

You have zero reason other than your own biases to think that would be their response. They may well have long religious traditions of their own. Until the saucers land, it's all just speculation.

And what if they do? Again, speculation.

If Xenu really does show up, I suspect the Pope will be one of the first to greet him.

And on what exactly do you base this claim? I myself think the dogmatic Abrahamic religions in particular will have problems digesting. Buddhists and Hindus, perhaps not so much.

Presumption and condescension? Okay yeah, that'll sway my opinion around to agree with yours. Good job.

"Zero reason", huh? I've already offered the Spanish meeting the Aztecs as a real-life example of what can happen. And such scenarios have played out many many times in human history.

And what if they do? Again, speculation.

What's this thread about, and what's wrong with speculating?

If Xenu really does show up, I suspect the Pope will be one of the first to greet him.

And when Xenu says "you can stop worshiping God now and start worshiping me", what then?

Looking at the mess our world is in, it seems over development is a precursor for extinction

Hi Woodrow!

Let me ask you: how would you, as a muslim, handle being told by aliens that Allah and Muhammed are fictions?

Why haven't we found aliens yet? Maybe they're all dead.

I've got some living right down the street from me!

The Abrahamic religions will have little problem digesting such knowledge. What makes you think they would?

My apologies if I offended, but based on a few things you've written, I get the impression you haven't actually done much reading on the dialogue between religion and science. You seem to be of the Bill Maher / Richard Dawkins stripe who likes the straw men. If that is a misconception on my part, I apologize.

There has been so such scenario of proven extraterrestrial contact in history. But fine. If you can find an Aztec priest, I concede the point that he might possibly worship aliens. In fact, according to that wild-haired guy on the history channel, the Aztecs probably did worship aliens.

Well, Xenu will have hardly been the first to tell that to the Church. The Church and the Jews are still here. Where is Caesar?

And let me ask you: Why are you so convinced aliens would say any such thing? Your "what if?" is just a what if.

The catholic church owns and operates observatories and employs astronomers. Pope might show up.
