Its brain is not built to handle such concepts. In the case of UFOs, I suspect we are the dogs, and what these things really are is beyond our current understanding. These things may be from another star, another dimension, some part of Earth we have not figured out, or (most likely) something we simply have not discovered yet because they are in a part of the cosmos beyond our slightly-above-average monkey brains.
Another guess on the weirder side would be that they're the result of some aspect of human consciousness we don't understand; similar to the sprul-pa ("emanation") in Tibetan mythology, they're a sort of hallucination that can take on an element of independence, or at least be experienced by (and perhaps added to) by other observers. This could explain hauntings as well - they're creations of our own consciousness. Sort of super-hallucinations.

The Polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem dealt with beings that are so alien that we are incapable of understanding their motives or actions. His novel Solaris, made into a movie by Andrei Tarkovsky (a masterpiece) and then by Hollywood (featuring George Clooney - not a masterpiece) is about researchers on a planet covered by a sentient ocean, and the strange things that begin happening that are apparently attempts by ocean to communicate with the researchers. Or do something that we're interpreting as communication, but their real purpose is beyond our comprehension. At the end of the story, they're no closer to understanding than they were at the beginning. Assuming UFOs are not hallucinations, I suspect that's closer to the truth than grey aliens coming here from some other world or dimension or the future to observe us or steal our eggs.

Well, not really, it seems like UFO reports of the past, eventually lead to publicly known aircraft...

Example, in the 1800s, people were reporting mechanical craft, with rudders and propellers, engines making loud noises, etc (Its amazing that this pretty much describes alot of early aircraft).

If people today are reporting totally silent aircraft, ability to cloak themselves, have the ability to effect mechanical objects in the vicinity, even people...Its probable, this will be the next generation of aircraft technology, that will eventually become public knowledge.

But hey, that's just my guess. I may be wrong. Until more evidence comes to light ...
Thats pretty much what I believe..(Im on the fence a little bit on them being demonic), but I definitely do not believe they are from some 'far off' place. I think they originate closer to home than we think! I also believe we are not fully able to comprehend 'what' they are, or why they are here.
