For those who don't know, the Paw Paw Tunnel is an old tunnel along the C & O Canal, near Cumberland, Maryland. It's 5/8 mile long, ramrod straight, and really, really dark inside. The canal has been defunct for almost a century and is now a national park; the tunnel is open to the public and anyone can walk through it.
I've been through it a number of times, and I've never had any "otherworldly" experiences there. But then again, I'm not attuned to paranormal phenomena, so I probably wouldn't notice anything unusual even if it were happening. It's dark, and kind of creepy, but is it haunted? Apparently some people believe that it is:

There is an interesting, and somewhat creepy, optical illusion associated with the tunnel. As you approach the upstream portal (see the 4th picture in the linked article), the other end doesn't look all that far away. But then, when you enter the tunnel, your perspective shifts, and suddenly it looks a whole lot farther away. (See the 5th picture. This photo was definitely taken with a camera that is good in low-light situations; in real life it's a lot darker than that in there.) In fact, the other end actually appears to be receding away from you as you walk. It's weird, for sure; even a little unnerving. But it's not paranormal.
Does anyone here have any experience with this tunnel? What are your thoughts?
