I highly doubt the flying pig shape

Also the way they inserted Puritans into their description makes me wonder too.
When they say it was in the shape of a pig, Im pretty sure they are referring to the pigs body (sort of tubular, oval shaped), its not like the UFO had 4 legs, a snout and ears!

People from that time, looked at the basic shape and used something they were familiar with to describe it.

If you look at other older reports (before the airplane was invented), its common to see witnesses say the UFO looked like a "brightly lit carriage'...Now, obviously, the UFO was not in the shape of an actual horse drawn carriage, they were just using something they were familiar with, to describe what it looked similar to, (the basic shape of a carriage...which is rectangular, or square.), just like a pig, has a tubular or oval shaped body.

John Winthrop was the Governor of the Massachusetts colony. His diary also includes the following:
Then a record appears on January 18, 1644, where Winthrop writes that the strange phenomenon had already returned to the sky of Boston:

“Around midnight, three men, approaching in a boat to Boston, saw two fires arising from the water near the city bay. The form resembled a man. The lights went to the southern part of the city and disappeared ”.

A week later, another entry appeared:

“A light that resembled the moon in brightness appeared in Boston again, flying over the city at high speed. Now they say that he shot a flame and sparkled in different colors. The object around eight in the evening saw a lot of people. ”
Here is the "flying swine" incident in Winthrop's actual words:
"In this year one James Everell, a sober, discreet man, and two others, saw a great light in the night at Muddy River. When it stood still, it flamed up, and was about three yards square; when it ran, it was contracted into the figure of a swine: it ran as swift as an arrow towards Charlton [Charlestown], and so up and down about two or three hours. They were come down in their lighter about a mile, and, when it was over, they found themselves carried quite back against the tide to the place they came from. Divers other credible persons saw the same light, after, about the same place."

The only exception would be 'balloons', but those were slow moving and stayed low to the ground, they could not dart around at high speed.
Balloons were about a hundred years later.

And keep in mind, these people didn’t have language for aircraft. They’d use words that would make sense to them.

This is also NOT the origin of when pigs fly. That’s an old Scottish saying from the 1600’s meaning it will never happen.

Right, they didnt know what to call this thing...there was no word for it at the time.

Like Ive said before, the only reason they used a pig in the explanation, was probably because the UFO had a tubular or oval shape to it, and 'to them', it looked like the body of a pig. (if you look at the body of an adult pig, its long and oval shaped in appearance.)

I am related to those folks, and they were ingesting a lot of hullucinogenic grains back then. Sort of a grain fungus from improperly stored grain, similar to LSD. Some of that same grain fungus might be the root cause of the witch trials.

Why di it take Gov Winthrop several months to record this event in his diary?

Drifting one mile in three hours isn't very fast.

What was the purpose for aliens of advanced intelligence to make repeated 2 mile trips back & forth?... Mating dance?...Teenage alien son swiped the keys to the saucer and he's just fooling around?...The alien ate some of that tainted corn & he's FUI?.... More likely such alternating movement would be attributable to alternating electric charges as dipoles flip.

I'm skeptical about the "pig" description. A common item at the time to match the characteristics would be a cask or keg. Maybe someone originally described it as a "keg", but the person writing it down forgot and ended up writing it as "pig". A few pints of grog, mead, ale or beer at Ye Olde Tavern could cause a lapse in memory, especially those that found themselves a mile upstream. Another thought worth noting is that the word "hogshead" (hogges hede) refers to a unit of barrel size measurement of 63 gallons, a little larger than a barrel of oil. Although that word isn't mentioned, still, hog/pig.

Another thing to note is that the size of the object was said to be 3 cubic yards. In other words 9 feet x 9 feet x 9 feet.

I dont know what a keg from that time looked like, but a keg of beer today is pretty close in appearance to a pigs body.

I hope no one is suggesting the craft took on the actual shape of a pig?
