Cannabis does not cause the symptoms you describe at all, except paranoia which maybe explains some of her preoccupation with the possession angle. But not violence unless it was laced with something else. Was it synthetic cannabis by chance?
At this stage we can safely say that they weren't possessed by Athena the Ancient Goddess of War. Let's put the possession theory to bed.
So back to the source -
To explain the husband's violent actions - sometimes phychosis is right below the surface and triggered by some anxiety event that brings on stress - anything happen in his life recently? Loss of job? Illness? Some drastic life change? Were they elderly?
To explain the possession claim - did the wife and husband have strange religious beliefs from the old country? I joked about it before but was the wife watching some TV shows on ancient Greece? Something has GOT to explain that angle.
And sometimes, people you think you know well, you just don't know at all.
EDIT - per this article (not my opinion) psychosis can be brought out be cannabis IF he already had some pre-existing condition.

They were facing some stress at work since january, but as they useto say "we know god is with us and will never let us down"
They do believe in voodoo things but stay away from it. They believe in things like bad eyes and have to pray a lot,in church, to remove it. Like when somethinh went wrong its because of bad eyes.

They both sound very gullible, naïve, poorly educated and superstitious.
Most Christians have nothing to do with palm-reading, the evil eye, voodoo, etc. They may not term such practices "evil", but they just don't believe in them.
Nor would most Christians believe they or others could be possessed by the spirit of an ancient god. Most Christians would assign Athena to ancient Greek mythology - while they might enjoy learning about Greek or other mythology, they would not believe in these myths or the gods they feature, as all Christians believe there is only one God who is immortal (and most Christians believe in the Trinity - God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
Most Christians would not think that any of the ancient mythological gods have any power at all, since they were and are false gods who only existed in the minds of those who believed in them long, long ago.
I am sorry this terrible event occurred to your friends. I hope the surviving wife will recover physically, and that her mental state will be evaluated and treated if necessary as well.

that's people, not "victims"

My fiance in college was developing some sever psychiatric disorder (don't ask me, I was 19 at the time) and when she'd go into "another" psych. state she'd look unlike herself. the physical change is directly related to what they now refer to as "psychopathy"? Intotherwords, she was mentally ill. The acting out part projecting your internal anger AT someone else is usually someone close to you. Especially if you thing they 'SEE" YOU AS YOU ARE.

I have many missionary relatives. They have seen demonic possession first-hand in 3rd world countries. Including feats of super-human strength.
I really felt I saw it first-hand once in my ex's eyes as he punched me in the face---absolutely a maniacal glare of pure evil. No drugs, no bath salts. Evil, pure and simple. You open the door to evil, you'll get it.
I left for good. Once is enough.

They live like 400km from this area. I dont know if they have been there yet. The wife still recovering, she may lost feeling in both hand. Psychologically, she just dont want to talk about it for the moment.
