I have a feeling what we are seeing in these UFOs are electro/magnetic plasma pulses and weapons technology. If you read this series of articles(link below) you will probably come to the same conclusion.
There is good evidence the worlds governments have significantly more advanced technology than nuclear weapons - even in 1996 timeframe.
It appears as if some governments have been testing these weapons in our atmosphere. The evidence for this is this series of articles which document research on a set of events in Australia which initially seems to be meteorites but subsequently was found not to be. Numerous witness testimony across the area gives a good account of what happened.
In that area of Australia there have been no seismic events in Aboriginal history and since recording started hence the area is thought to be very stable. Also, the events were documented as having lasted for a number of hours yet many of them seemd to 'land' or be headed for a particular area in Australia. This would be impossible for meteorites since the Earth would have turned and the trajectory would have taken these 'meteorites' to land in another part of the globe and NOT in the same area of Australia.
