A Casual Breakdown of Ghostly Encounters

The data used in this collection is derived from a set of user videos from various sources. Material is includes anything from professional paranormal groups, CCTV, dashcams, non-paranormal hobbyist/how-to/instructional videos as well as from common family home videos. The data set is international and of global geographic scope.

Samples are taken on a per-video basis. That is, even if a video covers clips across several recording sessions it is counted as a single sample as long as it involves the same observer, location and approximate date. Events within samples are counted per sample, not per-occurance. For example, if a witness experiences multiple knocking events it is collected as one knocking experience for that sample. This counting method was determined due to the excess of events which occur only as cascading events, derived effects or weaker repetitions of the preceding captures.

Omitted from samples are encounters which do not occur on camera. When an individual reports that they are feeling pain or sickly, it is counted under the umbrella of feeling ill at the location. Precaution has been taken to omit misidentified and fabricated material at discretion as much as possible.

Types of Encounters
There are two primary behaviors that apparitions exhibit. One consistency is that these encounters tend to be extremely brief, usually lasting only a few seconds. Only a few samples contained an apparition which persisted long enough to approach or interact with.
  1. The spirit can be seen briefly in transit between two places, such as between doorways, across the threshold of a window or door, traversing a hallway etc. These tend to go unnoticed by nearby observers, hence finding them later when reviewing footage. Also the apparition itself often does not seem to show any awareness to having been seen.
  2. The spirit can be observed peering partially around an edge. These seem to be very common in samples, with usually only a head and hand or shoulder being exposed momentarily before slinking back into cover. Observers behind the camera are either caught completely off guard, causing a fright and unfortunately blurring the film as they react. Or they, like with type A encounters, do not see it in the moment.
The behavior of peering around edges and corners informs us that they perceive through fixed eyes much like living organisms. That is, a spirit which extends a limb beyond a threshold cannot use it to see. They behave in a way which obeys the placement of their head and eyes. Additionally, they exhibit a tendency to remain still while gazing at a subject leading one to conclude that their vision is subject to distortion from movement, much like we experience.

Spirits ability to navigate in the complete absence of visible light suggests that they perceive a broader spectrum of light than the human eye. They can be observed reacting to the infrared light cast by cameras equipped with night vision functionality. One video resource (tababo0: Trampoline Park) even depicts a figure repeatedly activating night vision cameras in an empty trampoline attraction, by passing in from of them, as though amused by the automated switch into night mode caused by its movement.

Spirit locomotion does not appear to be limited by physical boundaries despite an overwhelming proportion of samples depicting them walking. Instances can be found of them in flight or at speeds far exceeding that of running or walking. Most unexpectedly, there are a number of instances in which apparitions exit a space by retreating into the ground on which they appear to be standing.

Apparitions can be observed reproducing human like vocalizations. A common trait among these is the absolute volume of a vocalization being much lower than that of speech produced by a living person. Even samples of screaming voices follow this trend, when accounting for the position they originate from.

Most stairway encounters have the witness led to the stairwell by noise. Those who stop at the landing, at either the top or bottom of a stairway, and pause have been the majority of samples who have experienced being charged by rapid footsteps rushing toward the observer (notable samples: michaelandheather: Ouija board session, Paranormies: Steinback, Canada farmhouse, itssimon: night security).

A final interesting observation is that apparitions can react intelligently in response to being spotted by a witness. Like a small animal encounter, they pause and wait as if to see what the witness will do first before rapidly retreating from view. Examples of this variety are difficult to examine due to the witnesses, in nearly every instance, obscuring the camera during their reflexive fright. Samples in which observers failed to notice the apparition until after later reviewing the captures offer the best insight into this behavior.

Below are the breakdown, by location type, the likelihood of experiencing some allegedly paranormal phenomenon where an encounter has occurred.

Precise numbers can be explored in the attached file Ghost Behavior Profiles.
