A large metal sphere that washed up on a shore in Japan has perplexed locals and set off a flurry of speculation.
Authorities can't say what it is yet - not even the police or bomb squad sent to investigate.
But what is known is that it's hollow - and not a threat. Many suspect it to be a type of buoy.
Authorities cordoned off the area and conducted X-ray exams which did not reveal much more - other than confirming the object was safe.
The find in coastal city Hamamatsu has been variously dubbed "Godzilla egg", "mooring buoy" and "from outer space" by fascinated locals.

Once, after a hurricane, a bright yellow oddly shaped metal craft showed up on the beach, obviously made by some advanced species. Authorities were mystified, locals were amazed, the media reported with breathless excitement. What is it? Where did it come from? Who made it?
OK, everything after "some advanced species" is made up nonsense. It was a wave buoy that broke free from the storm. Men in a big truck came and took it away. The men who were responsible for it. Nobody was "mystified", and the media didn't try and turn it into some big click bait story. OK maybe a few did, but intelligent people mocked them.

Yep. Is it deception? Or are the media "experts" so bad at their job they can't do a Google search?

Many also questioned on social media why Japanese officials have not explained what it is. Others have voiced embarrassment at the whole episode.
The Japanese authorities' response to the metal sphere was as curious as the object itself.
The mysterious ball washed up amid a heightened sense of nervousness here. Last week Japanese media was discussing the ramifications of North Korea's recent missile activity.
Given this tense undercurrent of geopolitical events and perceived threats from its neighbours, the flurry of speculation in Japan is understandable.
In Japan if the discoverers didn't know what it actually was they may have assumed it was an old WW2 naval mine line bomb with Hertz horns not evident . There are still lots of them drifting around that haven't been recovered yet. Every once in a while after heavy storms one of them will wash up onshore, they've been found in various places around the world.
