The first known spirit board in America was in 1886. There is some debate as to where the idea came from, a board with letters, but it was during the mid 1800's that 'talking to spirits' became a form of entertainment.
This is what fueled the creation of it, or possibly the revised (English/modern) version. As I said, there is some debate. Some say that there have been talking spirit boards since ancient times.
Oh I see.

Thanks for the clarification. How can we edit Wiki?

You can get the Hasbro Ouija board special on Amazon. They come in the glow-in-the-dark variety or...the below that takes AA batteries. LOL...I guess "the spirits" need some battery powered assistance.

Amazon.com: Ouija Board Game: Toys & Games

...just a whimsical comment, for those that do not have a sense of humour.

A few of the user comments in the Amazon link indicated people collect them. Like stamps or coins I guess.
Here is a wooden one sold through Amazon (no I do not get any royalties from Amazon for posting there products LOL), still the plastic planchette however:
Amazon.com: Classic Ouija Board Game: Toys & Games

Sure. Make fun of all of these bad experiences. It's just a toy.

Tell yourself that.

Right. Sure. Whatever.

My son (married adult) started messing around with one of these. Apparently in the process he invited a malavolent spirit into his home. Bad, scary things started happening (apparitions, physical manifestations including getting pushed and hit, etc). He moved very shortly thereafter, spirit did not follow him, thankfully. But he hasn't messed with one since.
