There is a certain radio talk host that said today on the radio how lucky we are in America to have what we have where even our poor live better than average people in England, France or Germany. He offered for proof the fact that almost everybody in the USA heats or air conditions their whole living space regardless of which room is occupied. He said people in England, France and Germany are so bad off that they can only heat one room at a time in their homes. So at night, they only heat the bedroom and in the day only the living room is heated. True to not true?
NPR had a bit where they were bitching about US forces oversees. So the dude goes ahead and complains about US forces in the UK and she asks why are they there and his response was "protecting them from the Irish". I kid you not .......
yeah that's true for me anyway lol, all day (in winter) I will have my fire on in my living room, and about an hour before I go to bed I stick my fire on in my bedroom, I live in a fairly small 3 bedroom flat, so it heats up the whole house, it's not fuel poverty or anything, that just does the job is all!
Often true . My stepmother (87), who lives in Toulouse, has a 3-bedroom apartment, and in winter, only heats her bedroom and the dining room, because heating is expensive, but it's a good thing to save energy. And the living conditions of the working poor and the unemployed, as far as I can compare, are absolutely on a par or even lower than their US counterparts, certainly not better.
I can't speak for anyone else but it depends on where you live.
My neighbor doesn't have central heating. So yes, she uses a heater from room to room. I have central heating and when it's cold enough to really need it I can (and do) use it.... but I also have a wood stove, and yes, a small portable heater. (Because sometimes it's not worth the money to heat the whole house if I'm only going to be in part of it).
For the most part from what I've seen living here--it's a matter of choice how you choose to heat where you live. Not out of pure necessity.
It sounds like a liberal hatchet job to make Americans look like they're too stupid to save any energy.
