US supermarkets are up to the standards of UK ones in terms of quality. If anything the range of fresh produce in the US is better quality.
The thing we all miss is the range of goods on offer in one place.

Tesco's particularly really is a one stop shop, with very clever marketing, where you can buy literally anything you need under one roof at extraordinarily good prices and great quality. It is the ultimate convenience store. The closest comparison here I'd say would be Target, though it has less emphasis on food and more on homewares than Tesco's. I like Target but it doesnt have the range you find in Tesco's.
Sainsbury's and Asda are similar shops, though Asda is slightly more downmarket.

I really really miss granary bread. My consumption of Marmite has dropped dramatically since I moved to the US!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but couldn't you make it- the bread that is?

Too hot to paint the summer house. The paint will dry out too quickly.

That's my excuse anyway.

LOL - wouldn't an ice cold lager (or 2 or 3!) keep you cool enough?

It would, but I don't drink (I do, but it's a silly expression).

I have elderflower lined up.

I wanted to try my hand at elderflower cordial or champagne this year but don't think I'll get to it in time this year before I go on holiday. Have you ever made either?

I could try, but I haven't attempted to make bread since school cookery classes. Attempting to bake bread would be interesting!
