I was on a forum a while back, and one of the British users said the word "chav". I looked it up, and it turns out that it's something like the UK's equivalent of white trash. And apparently the Burberry brand is associated with chavs. And Heather Mills has been described as one (which I can see).

Did any other Americans here know what "chav" meant before I brought it up here?

Yes, I've known about it for years, but I don't think most Americans do. You NEVER here the word here.

I only know about it because a guy from the U.K. used to post on a message board here years ago, and he mentioned chavs. No one knew what he was talking about, so he suggested we look it up.

I'm not sure there is an equivalent of a chav in the US.
I think of a chav as someone who spends money they don't have on expensive tasteless designer gear, not because they necessarily like it, but just because of the label.

Anyone else have a better definition?

Chav Trademarks: Tracksuits, lots of 10kt Argos gold jewelry, giant hoop earrings, tight ponytails, heavy eyeliner, poorly educated, ignorant, chip on their shoulder, on the dole, slack-jawed, drunk.

That's just from reading about them. Did I miss anything? Was the description over-the-top?

UK chavs/neds and rednecks/white trash are nothing alike.

In the U.S., you can be a redneck and actually be living a productive life. Of course, there are different levels of rednecks.

In Scotland its Neds.. By 2006 the term chav from the South of England[19] was used across the United Kingdom, with ned often seen as the synonymous Scottish term. Other local terms are "schemies" in Edinburgh and "scallies" in Liverpool

Having lived in Mississippi and having visited many states i´d say that rednecks are totally different to chavs, both are equally looked down upon though.

Yes, I knew, but only because I have known some British people for many years, and I use to live in London.

I will say that there is not an equivalent in the US; some come close, but not at the scale as in the UK.

I would put Chavs in the top three most annoying groups in the world, at least that I have experience with.

What I meant is that most rednecks have jobs. That's a major difference right there, isn't it?

BTW, have you heard of the phrase "Thank God for Mississippi."?
