When I studied abroad in the UK, my friend and I took the National Express at night from London to Edinburgh. I also took a few other night trips with both companies just by myself. I felt it was just fine and didn't really see any danger. The only thing I recalled was that the London-Edinburgh route was one of the most popular bus routes - not sure if more travelers would mean a more dangerous environment or not.

How cool! I studied in UK as well, but took few trips to Edinburgh by driving a car.
