Im sure Scotland could go it alone, but to compare 2014 Scotland to 18th Century US isnt very workable, Scotland is a tiny country with less than 10% of the population of the USA which is a country the size of a whole continent! As an English Briton with both Scottish and English ancestory (like countless other Britons) I feel that the UK would do better to stay as it is, if however the Scots want independence then that of course is their right and I would wish them well, however as an Englishman I think its only right that we also get to vote on the many issues that a split would create.
And you know I'd just sugegst soemmthing from history in that when the colonies elected to separate from britain it was truly a 'close-run' thing after independence went through. At times it looked like the governemnt had a tiger by the tail as 'these United States' were caught up in political and economic vortices after the decision was made. Arguably 'independence' movements are fraught with unease as they begin and go on.

And Osborne's comment about no currency union. I'd ask then what could the possible repercussions be then to Scotland in the currency markets? If a 'tiny' country, then perhaps currrency issues just could be the gigantic whale swallowing up the country if things go awry.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said it would be "extremely difficult, if not impossible" for an independent Scotland to join the European Union.

.......

He said: "We have seen Spain has been opposing even the recognition of Kosovo, for instance. So it is to some extent a similar case because it's a new country and so I believe it's going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, a new member state coming out of our countries getting the agreement of the others."

Actually, Trump and Salmond have fallen out. In the light of recent events, the currency decision has changed and it will now be:

Other options include Slot Machine Tokens, which might be okay as long as the Scots can exchange them for a drink at the Bar.

And there's always the Bitcoin.

My opinion is Scots are being led to the independence thing by a few who are looking to gain from it, at the expense of many who will suffer, and they are using the nationalism angle to do it because any other angle makes zero sense.

Classic politics, wolves leading the lamb to the slaughter.

Even if it isn't going to be difficult, it certainly won't be instantaneous. Scotland would have exactly 0 trade agreements with 0 nations. They will be starting from scratch.

Personally, I think that Barroso was laying down a marker. Yes, an independent Scotland will get admitted. But it will be as a new member, no fast tracking and accepting the full 'acquis' including Schengen and the Euro. By saying how 'difficult' it will be he was, in my opinion, basically telling Scotland not to ask for any special treatment or favours and to play nice. Just my interpretation.

I agree. The EU is expansive by nature, and is not going to want to lose several million citizens it would otherwise control. Up to this point Salmond has been telling the rest of Britain how things are going to be post a yes vote, and crying bully if anyone disagrees. Re-entry to the EU will be entirely on the EU's terms, no ifs or buts. Take it or leave it.
