There were guesses at who would be on this new fiver in the UK. some thought a sportsman or woman. some Maggie Thatcher but no, its to be Winston Churchill.

Thank Goodness it wasn't Maggie. Then the economy would literally be going down the toilet with many of her non fans flushing it down the loo....

Well, Churchill was a great wartime leader. However, his record in peacetime was less illustrious. In 1945, the British people were well aware of this and, perhaps, a little less misty eyed than we are today. Which probably explains why he was ejected from office in the general election of that year.

Frankly, I am a little surprised that UK has given up on women. I am sure that Maggie never had a chance. The USA keeps trying to put a woman on the $1 coin, but they won't stop printing the $1 banknote, so people refuse to switch to the coin.
