Oh yeah, Colorado doesn't have castles, it has ruined mine buildings instead. But it really does look like the Scottish highlands minus the ocean and less green when your above timberline.
Wales has its fair share of abandoned coal mines. Some give tours by former mine workers.

I prefer the Scottish Highlands. The only problem is many of these rural towns and villages located in the hills are often deprived, run-down dumps with no economic opportunities. Aberdeenshire is an exception as it is one of the wealthiest counties in Britain, since many people who live in say Aboyne or Braemar will work in Aberdeen, probably in the oil industry. This way you can enjoy a rural lifestyle surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and not have to live in a really crappy place.
The Lake District is also a nice area with some beautiful towns like Keswick, Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere. Sadly, these towns all have ridiculously inflated house prices, some of the highest in the country, due to its location in the national park, and Russian oligarchs who also enjoy buying country homes in the Lake District.
I was so tempted to put up a picture of Susan Boyle but my wife stopped me!
