That's the kind of thing that makes it so difficult for we Americans to warm to soccer football. We prefer our football teams -- and sports teams in general -- to have fearsome and aggressive monickers. Lions, Tigers, Bears, Giants, Hawks, Rams, Eagles, Falcons. That kind of thing.
Of course, we also have the Green Bay packers, named after a meat-packing firm. And the San Francisco 49ers, named for the 1849 California gold rush. And the Baltimore Ravens, named for the subject of Edgar Allen Poe's most famous poem. So we Yanks have a small dollop of sophistication after all. But the toffees? I don't foresee a groundswell of Everton fever in places like Texas or Alabama. ("Bwah, y'all team is named fo' a caindee? Git yer sorry butt outen heah, pronto!")
People don't follow a team because of their 'nicknames', giving Torquay United the nickname the 'raving mad flesh tearing lions' isn't going to stop them from being s h i t e :-)

Ah, but Torquay puts this Yank in mind of Tanqueray gin, than which there are few better for a dry martini.

There is your answer, support Torquay United, millions of Britons don't follow Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea, there is something appealing about the 'gritty end of the football pyramids', also Torquay is the 'English Riviera' so its a nice place to holiday! It is of course also the home of Basil Fawlty and his hotel :-D.

Thanks, but it's Everton for me (see post #85).
Besides, I want to meet the toffee girl if I ever make it back to the UK:
Well last year they won almost all of their games like 1-0. Parking the bus on steroids
