Is anyone else shocked that MPs will be making £74,000 soon? There is not a politician on this planet worth that much. Hell, I don't think they're worth the 60+ they are making now. Do medical doctors even make that now? Most college lecturers don't and I argue we contribute more tp society than any MP ever will. Thoughts?

MP pay rise plan 'inappropriate'

That's an old chestnut trotted out in defence of people who already earn 3.5x the median wage.

MP's are paid plenty already. They also get to claim £000's per year in expenses they don't need to produce receipts or any other proof for.

They can also pocket the profits on their 2nd homes the taxpayer buys for them. The changes being made to the current expenses system isn't going to change that.

There isn't an MP in the country earning 'only' £66k

On any street in any town you will find someone who is more than capable of doing the job of an MP and who will be very happy indeed to do it for £66k.

It seems our ruling class would like a return to the days of Downton Abbey where all the wealth and power is in the hands of a small percentage of the population while everyone else gets to earn a pittance.

It's high time the system was overhauled. In Britain we have 650 MP's which is far too high a number. Around 300 would be more than enough. And an elected 2nd chamber replacing the toffs, god botherers and political appointees is long, long overdue.

Our political system belongs to the establishment and not the people. A £11k pay rise isn't about to change that.
