This isn't a ranking, as I've only been to London and Birmingham, they're listed by size:

London
Manchester
Birmingham
Leeds
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Nottingham
Southampton
Sheffield
Bristol
Leicester
Brighton
Middlesbrough
Coventry
Sunderland

List of urban areas in the United Kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to size of surrounding urban area.

And also, if you can, by friendliest (most to least).

It would vary depending on what criteria we're talking about.

For visiting, for me, it'd be (for the ones I've visited):

London
Manchester
Bristol
Brighton
Leeds
Newcastle
Birmingham
Nottingham
Sheffield
Leicester

For living, it would be:

Bristol
Brighton
Leeds
Sheffield
London
Nottingham
Newcastle
Manchester
Birmingham
Leicester

I've stayed in every one of those, but don't ask me to go to most of them again.

I'm not really a city person, and it was mainly for work.

I was in Bristol today and as far as cities go it's not bad and the people are pretty friendly.

Of those listed I'd only really consider going to London for the art galleries.

And you'd be right, it is the second largest city in England, perhaps Manchester is larger when the urban sprawl is taken into consideration.

Greater Manchester is 2.68 million - Greater Birmingham is 2.44 million, so roughly the same size.

Manchester and Birmingham are relatively equal in most measurements. Birmingham has the largest local authority in the country, but Manchester just pips Birmingham when you consider the entire urban area and not arbitrarily-defined council areas.

I prefer Manchester in any case though. I could never 'like' Birmingham that much - it's an alright city, but I find it less attractive than other UK major cities with poor public realm. Manchester and Birmingham are both dirty though, and that's a major negative.

Is it only me or does Glasgow feel ''bigger'' than Birmingham and Manchester. I was surprised by Birmingham it felt fairly small for its population size.
