Queen down to her last million due to courtiers' overspending, report finds

It's time for Queen Elizabeth to "get a much firmer grip" on her dwindling supply of cash, members of Britain's Parliament say: The royal cash reserve is down to 1 million pounds, or about $1.7 million, according to their report. That's a "historic low," they say; in 2001, the figure was almost $58 million, the Guardian reports. At the heart of the problem, according to the Telegraph, is overspending by the queen's courtiers; MPs say it's time for them to take money advice from the Treasury. In 2012-2013, the Royal Household received more than $51 million in taxpayer funds, NBC News reports.

Jeez, couldn't the Queen sell off a tiara or two? Mebbe some of the lands stolen from the people centuries ago? Get rid of a few flunkies? Only kidding, give the old girl some more money! Just the amount saved by scrapping her yacht 'Britannia', staffed by dozens of sailors 365 days a year, must have saved us taxpayers millions!!

We could close up some of the royal palaces staffed all year round..... Lots of ways to save some money.

I find it distasteful for Parliament to even raise the Queen's salary all while cutting back on social programs.

The Queen's money is mainly spent on the upkeep of buildings which belong to the state, and in recent years much more of the estate and collection have been open to tourists.

Much of the estate is historic and listed, and many of the artefacts are also of national importance, in the same way as the Tower of London, British Museum or National Trust properties these properties and artefacts are of national importance, and there up-keep would have to be paid for one way or another any way.

What does the Queen spend taxpayer money on?

You know it's been suggested that maybe the Queen can go to work now. Some have suggested her to do some flicks and bring in the pounds! Pretty cool. Maybe even do some Shakespeare. Hey she could 'reinvent' herself you know. Stardom could await in the footlights....;-)....

Answer is simple; return the revenue Crown Estates to HM and her successors and there wouldn't be a need for funds from the government.

"George Osborne, the Chancellor, has scrapped the Civil List, which financed the official duties of the Queen, and replaced it with a Sovereign Grant that is equal to 15pc of the Crown Estate’s annual profits."

As with the nobility what one sees in the homes or other possessions of the monarch may or may not be their own personal property to dispose of as they see fit. Much of HM's jewels are part of the Crown Estate thus cannot be sold or otherwise alienated without the consent of parliament.

Now there is of course the Windsor's personal collections and things that have been given to HM directly during her lifetime. IIRC the division runs along what is given to the monarch versus what is given to the person.
