Should we as Brits regret 'losing' the American colonies?

At the time they did but who knows how history would then have panned out?

Gaining independence brought about other issues for the newly fledged Country, not least the American Civil War which took place less than eighty years after gaining self determination.

There is no "what might have been." There is only "what is."

Since Americans play Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the Queen to accompany their fireworks they do seem to miss you.

Harharharharhar! I didn't know that little dude was a country singer! Apparently they've got this concept pretty well figured out.

“Well, you do what you do and you pay for your sins, but there's no such thing as what might have been. That's a waste of time; drive you outta your mind”
― Tim McGraw

there is really no such thing as what might have been. there's what happened and what will happen. i've just had to realize that what might have been is imaginary, and it's this beautiful illusion of how it could have been if you had just done this right or if he had just liked you or if things had just lined up. but things don't line up and boys don't like you and you mess up for a reason. -Taylor Swift

4th July is just any other day in the UK.. I doubt the average person even knows what the date means to Americans, it isn't really taught in school.

Can't blame them - we don't celebrate the Canadians kicking our butts in 1775 or 1812.

What might have been, and what has been, point to one end, which is always present.

Hahaha.. our history lessons at school mostly consisted of the Roman Empire, WW1 and WW2. In primary school you learn about Egyptians, Greeks, Tudors, the Industrial Revolution and stuff like that.. but we never really learn about the US independence!
