In 2012, 4 of the top 5 biggest selling albums in the United States were by British artists.
In the past month, Ed Sheeran's new album debuted at number 1 in the United States. Right now, 3 of the top 6 best selling albums in the United States are by British artists.
To put that into perspective, in the United Kingdom only 1 of the top 6 best selling albums are by American artists.
In the States in the past month alone:
Ed Sheeran - Sing. Live on the Today Show (in the middle of NYC):
Sam Smith - Stay With Me. Live on the David Letterman show:
Rita Ora - I Will Never Let You Down. Live on the Jimmy Fallon show:
(etc)
The top 10 best selling albums in 2013 were ALL American.
Downton Abbey is the only well-known British TV show in the U.S. And even that is niche programming.
Where do you get this stuff?
I've been watching BBC programming right here in northeast Texas for decades. Prior to satellite TV, it was super popular on channels like PBS.
Just because you and your circle weren't or aren't aware of it doesn't mean that others haven't been devouring the BBC for decades on this side of the pond. And now with the internet and satellite TV, smart TVs, instant streaming, etc. of course it's become even more popular. But it's been alive and kicking for many years.
Well straight from the article #8 was Drake who is Canadian.
Top selling vinyl album was Daft Punk who are French
5th top selling download single was Lorde who is a New Zealander.
2012's top selling album was Adele who is English.
Now if you look at Billboards Top 100 songs of the year 2013, there are the following non-US artists...
Lorde, Avicii, Zedd, Icona Pop, Swedish House Mafia, Justin Bieber, Calvin Harris (and Florence Welch), Mumford and Sons, PSY, Of Monsters and Men, Rihanna, One Direction, Olly Murs, The Script, Emeli Sande, Passenger.
So that's 17 non-US artists across all genres (which includes the almost exclusively American Country genre).

I don't see any British shows on my tv so its not common at all.
As a Brit, it is always so funny when Americans say I love Monty PieThon, Benny Hill, really ??? They're all nearly 40 years old, Benny Hill, is probably not even broadcastable in the UK anymore due to it's mysogynism. And Monty Python really?? it was of it's time 40+ years ago. John Cleese has probably got to be the most unfunny bitter old fart around. Funny, no, sad, yes!
Utterly unbelievable along the lines of British Food is bad, Britains have terrible teeth, Brits are cold, arrogant and uncaring.. the list of utterly daft and untrue stereotypes is funny at first, then frankly a bit annoying. We are just like everyone else, and no we don't still think we have an empire or have any sense of false entitlement in the world.

When you change your name on CD, as you did, normally it gives one the chance for a fresh start, not an excuse to continue making a fool of yourself.
