"to hell or to connacht" as another man once said only he wasn't a blow hard minow, someone with actual power able to back up his big talk.
If your referring to Cromwell well it was a different age...to the victor goes the spoils. As an Irish writer has said Cromwell wasn't what he was painted by generations of Irish. The Irish like to be always seen as being badly treated. They thrive on that. Cromwell and the famine gives them something to complain about ad infinitum. Cromwell's soldiers killed a 1,000 Protestants. Maybe we too should start a whinging campaign

Ulster was affected by the famine but didn't seem to be the same whinging from there.
One man came to help out at the time of the famine but could not understand with all the fish in the rivers and sea they would not catch them and eat them. Instead they used them for fertilizer. But of course it was all to do with those bad people in London.
You added to your post, as I was replying. Yes, we were restrained........ very much so. You were the one who mentioned the Germans. I'll ask you again.......how do you think the Nazi's would have dealt with the IRA?
Or for that matter, the American armed forces dealing with a terrorist organisation within the US. How do you think the early 1970s American army would have dealt with the IRA?
That entire mindset is borne of an attitude of superiority, instead of asking why the violence erupted, you claim higher moral ground for not squashing the Irish into the ground
We see the same imperial attitude from other British folk here, glibly dismissing genocide during the Cromwell era, it was the killing of people undeserving of any better and the bigger crime is to dare complain about it.

Describing dissatisfaction at an event which caused the deaths of a million people as mere "whinging" is a tad flippant at best and callous at worst
No one would try and accuse the Jews of "whinging" when discussing the holocaust, if you don't view certain people as deserving of any better, I suppose it's not hard to be hard hearted, it's not for nothing ulster protestants are seen as hard headed and hard hearted

Why would Dave ask you why the violence with the IRA erupted? He and I are old enough to remember when it started. Do you think that he's a fool?
He killed 600,000 of the 1,400,000 Irish people, OK so 601,000 for the body count.
It seems that way. The figures given for the murder of Protestants was 35,000 although some would dispute that. But then too Protestants were driven off the land which resulted in them going to America,Canada. However, Protestants had not the same numbers as Catholics so the ratio might be similar
The Catholic writer from Drogheda tells a different story about Cromwell. Have you read it ?

You took Dave to task for not asking why the violence erupted. Go ahead, read back. You wrote it. He has repeatedly written about that timeframe. Please explain why he should ask why the violence erupted.
