I grew up in Liverpool and still visit when I'm back in the UK.
Liverpool has been undergoing a regeneration for the last 40 years.
It's almost unrecognisable from the city I knew as a kid. Even the entire city center has completely moved location.
This started from the time they converted the dock buildings into luxury apartments in the early 80's and opened the Tate Liverpool at the Albert Dock. The regeneration spread from there.

In my opinion Liverpool is a beautiful, thriving city full of energy. It always has been a beautiful city, full of the most stunning architecture you can imagine: two Cathedrals, St Georges Hall and the World museum included. In its early days it was world centre for import/export and there was a time when it rivalled London (still does in many ways) but like the rest of the UK spent many decades climbing out of the war years and like all big cities, there was a lot of poverty. We certainly grew up poor and didn't have two pennies to rub together in those days.

But a lot of that has changed. It is now a clean city with a wonderful university, a wealth of museums and galleries, great nightlife and a thriving shopping centre. Not to mention the friendliest people.

There's more than one university.

I don't know anything about Hope Uni or Edge Hill Uni but I used to deal with John Moores Uni, specifically their sports science facility.

I haven't been back to the city for around fifteen years.

Blimey- it was a few years ago!

I only dealt with that particular department as I was involved in respiratory diagnostics.

What I would say is that dealing with a number of similar departments in various 'new' universities around the country, they were very professional in their approach to research, and perhaps had a more forward looking approach to 'newer sciences' such as sports science.

As I have mentioned before, I'm not really a city person so when I'd be at these places I'd normally find a nice country hotel outside of the city and travel in daily.
