I've got to admit, this Jekyll and Hyde dual personality that some (not all) Brits have can take you by surprise. I wonder if many native Brits find their culture (local to them) repressive.
You will see the same behaviour on a Friday or Saturday night in most of the UK's town centres.
Apart from Liverpool, I doubt it.
As many Irish moved to the south as the north, maybe more if you take London into consideration, andthey would have assimilated into the majority population easily.
But even in the North you get the differing stereotypes of dour tightfisted Yorkshiremen, witty yet criminally inclined Scousers (Liverpool), gobby Mancs (Manchester), chemically mutated and odd Smoggies (Middlesbrough & Teeside) & gregarious, incomprehensible, horse punching, hard partying, weather defying Geordies in Newcastle.
And they're all pretty much BS....apart from Geordie incomprehensibility (is that a word?)
OH wheres my shock horror face..... but yes we are all different but I think its more to do with area of where you live than the country or county..

As Billy Connolly once said of you weegies, you are really a very friendly lot but nobody outwith Glasgow can understand you enough to know youre being friendly.

your right hahahahah... the thing is that most Glasgow folk have a sarky sense of humour... were all used to it here but others dont understand it.
Yeah having interacted with so many I think I kind of 'get' the British psyche in a way...there are similarities and differences between Brits and Aussies, but I still see a lot of them in us. In many ways we do seem sort of in between the UK and US culturally.

It's all about the drink culture whether at home or abroad. It's been a sea change since I've become teetotal, and hang around people who don't drink.

Yeah there's a big binge drinking culture in the UK and by extension Australia.

This makes me wonder why Americans stereotype the British as polite, well-spoken gentlemen and modest, tea-sipping ladies? How can a Country notorious for their drinking habits also have some of the most intelligent, smart/well-dressed, sophisticated people at the same time?
(It's no wonder the best actors/actresses in modern times are coming from the UK.)

Good question. Honestly, I think there a few reasons:
1) British people are very concentrated around London. Nearly 20% of the population of England, Scotland and Wales live in Greater London. Most (not all of course) educated Brits gravitate toward there at some point.
2) The UK's "cultural export" center is London.
3) The mix of polite, well spoken Brits and the type complained about above.
I think that the above means that foreigners who's exposure is mostly through the media only see the common stereotype. The "reality" so to speak, is hidden underneath. Most people here will never see anything but London in the media or hear anything other than the southern estuary English accent. The converse is true in the US, where wealth and opportunity is more scattered throughout the country, which means more exposure for people who aren't "part of the club" like in the UK. Much of US news will be broadcast in the UK from many cities throughout the country. It is also easier to have a voice or become successful in the US, so you get the likes of Sarah Palin (or some other buffoon) with a voice, which then gives the perception that Americans are less smart or sophisticated than Brits.
The reality is that there is an equal proportion of smart, sophisticated types and buffoons in every developed country.
