Comedian Russell Brand has been voted the world's fourth most important thinker by readers of intellectual magazine Prospect.
After making his name as an edgy and rule-breaking comic - who lost his Radio 2 slot over prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs - Brand has become a vocal proponent of the anti-capitalist message with his Revolution book, YouTube channel The Trews and appearances on Newsnight and Question Time.
But his inclusion on a list topped by French economist Thomas Piketty and including Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman and German philosopher Jurgen Habermas is certain to raise some eyebrows.
Unveiling its list of world thinkers in its latest edition, the magazine described Brand as "the spiritual leader of Britain's disaffected anti-capitalist youth", adding: "Dismissed by his opponents as a clownish opportunist, he is nevertheless the most charismatic figure on Britain's populist left."
Whatever his character flaws, the UK should at least be forever grateful to Russell Brand for giving the Miliband-led Labour Party its "Sheffield Rally" moment in that silly pre-election YouTube interview.
IF that's an intellectual thinker it dosent say much for the rest of the human race, the man-and I use the term loosely - is a raving idiot and a pillock to boot.
Don't agree with all his views. But at least he talks about a lot of things the media won't. I like him.
(sigh) Except he doesn't! Nothing he says or will ever say is remotely "counter media", that would destroy his ( lol ) career.
He is just another multi millionare english thicko, no different to Blair, Cameron, Clegg etc. He has just found a different audience of thickos to con, as long as the ££££ keep coming, he'll keep going.

What I liked the most about Russell Brand's commentary is that there's a big compassionate heart beating throughout. He might not always be right, but his is a sharp intellect matched by a genuine empathy for those less fortunate.
He is funny, quirky and entertaining. That's about it.
