IMHO, I think he was being tongue-in-cheek, and meant overtly, obviously and in-your-face 'deeply religious'. And maybe not 'unacceptable'; more unfashionable.
For the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant British at least.
People in the UK don't like to have religion forced on them, it is seen as a matter of personal, private choice.
UK Church-going has decreased greatly since WWII, and most Christians and Catholics keep their faith to themselves; even if they are deeply religious they don't make it a show - the most you will see is a tiny fish symbol on the back of a car. It is not commonplace in most of the UK to say "I'll pray for you", for example.
The British find American mass and/or TV evangelist religion (such as Billy Graham) a complete mystery, and they REALLY don't like it.
