Gerry and Sylvia Anderson were famous for sci-fi shows of the 1960s and 1970s featuring puppetry and live action. Some of their shows were “Thunderbirds”, “Joe 90”, “UFO”, and “Space:1999”.

These shows were magical for those of us luckily children at the time they were made. The first one that I remember was 'Four Feather Falls.' This was very primitive puppetry, compared to what came later. I think 'Supercar' was up next, followed by 'Fireball XL5', 'Stingray', then a massive step up in quality with 'Thunderbirds'. That for me, was the peak of Sylvia and Jerry's storytelling with puppets for children.

What followed was good, but not as good. I remember watching the first episode of 'Captain Scarlett' with my best friend. By then, we were 14 years old, and the magic was fading for us...... But, I did recognise the massive steps forward in the puppets. They now had heads that were of the correct size for their bodies!! It was obvious a lot of money had been spent on this show. I didn't watch 'Joe 90' as I had passed the age for this kind of thing.

Many decades later, 'Thunderbirds' was repeated, and found a new audience of children, as entranced by the show as I had been 30 years earlier. A toy based on 'Tracy Island' sold by the million, and was the toy every child wanted for Christmas. I was pleased to see it's late success, knowing even the more sophisticated kids of a later generation loved this puppet show.
