Re your American friends asking about color tv--they were retired, older folk. So they probably did remember after the war when American forged far ahead simply because we hadn't been bombed out, our cities weren't destroyed, we didn't have to rebuild. The soldiers just returned, got government loans to go back to school or buy a small house, and prosperity was the name of the game.

I do remember my Gram going back to England in the 1950s and she said her sisters didn't have central heating. People still probably were rationing food and other necessities. But if you were just a kid over here back then, you would think, "Wow, that's strange. What's wrong with these people?"

So some of the older people can be excused, I think. When we were kids it didn't register that there had been a war and even when we learned about it in school, we didn't make the connection. It didn't even hit home with me until I saw Germany in 1973, still with crumbled buildings. Until then, I just thought we Americans must be superior. London was still recovering back then.

I don't know how to justify any young people who say or think really stupid things. Except that they are young!
I have only met one weird person while visiting America, and he was very weird..... Some religious nut, with racial hating mixed in. He started talking with me while I was waiting for a bus in the middle of nowhere. I'm not even sure what State I was in at the time.

First time I saw a colour telly was about 1968 in a store window. There was a small crowd stood watching it..... I remember it was Ginger Rogers in a movie, and she was talking into a green telephone. They became real popular, but not until the early 70s. I didn't get a colour telly myself until about 1976.

Central heating wasn't common in the UK when I was a kid in the 60s. I didn't know anybody who had it. Most folks had coal fires. Later gas fires became quite common, then central heating became the norm. I didn't live in a house with central heating until I was 29 years old......

I still hanker for a coal fire, it was great for toasting bread, and was quite hypnotic to look into late at night as it slowly died out.

I remember asking my dad about a long road of houses. There were rows of old terraced houses, then a row of newish homes, and then rows of old ones. I asked him why that was. He told me where the new homes stood used to be old ones. A V1 flying bomb had landed on the houses Christmas Eve 1944, killing 27 people.

I woke up early on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago, turned on the television and saw a football game being played at Wembley. It was kind of fascinating.

Why hasn't hockey caught on in the UK? It's big in Scandinavia, Russia, Finland, Slovakia, and of course Canada.
Lack of facilities probably, it looks like hockey does quite well in countries that have cold winters, the UK winters are fairly mild, its not just hockey 'other' winter sports aren't very popular here (comparative to other northern hemisphere countries). Skiing isn't likely to be popular in a country where there is practically nowhere you can ski.

I think the bold is code for "passive aggressive" which to be fair the Brits are ranked in the top 3 in the world for. It's the one thing I really struggle with (even as a native), if you have an issue, let's just hear it and get it out of the way, but I'm regularly accused of being "aggressive aggressive", like I care (which is kind of what I'm talking about).

Passive aggressive is our speciality. Along with sarcasm, and a touch of irony on occasion........

Haha, an American lady in my bridge class thought she had more Scott and Irish blood in her. Often her comments were sort of ribbing my English husband against the Scotts. Then recently she told me some a gene test determined she has more English blood. No more friendly ribbing after that.

Ribbing is a form of endearment as if you know and like someone well enough to be able to take the slightly sarky remarks..and give them back of course.

First International Cricket Match was actually played in USA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadi...States_in_1844

USA also used to have (still has) Field Hockey teams which is another British export.

Soccer is popular in USA.

Americans have tried with British sports.

It remains to be seen that how competitive British are in American Football, Baseball, Basketball?
