I was reading the Washington Post and saw this article about the closing down of many pubs in Ireland. It fascinated me to think that this life-style of pub crawling at the end of one's day was drawing to an end, and wondered what other folks think--those in particular that went for a nip themselves or for that matter still do.

I've always considered Ireland a wee part of the United Kingdom, myself.

Ireland has been cracking down on the drunk driving and more people are choosing to drink at home. The cost of a pint is very expensive and the smoking ban has also kept people away. So many rural pubs are closing their doors. I don't think there's any panic though. I think there is still only one village in Ireland where no pub exists (sorry, the name escapes me, however) The pub culture isn't quite as popular as it used to be (since people have to get to work in the mornings!), but it's hardly dying out! Also, the Republic isn't part of the UK with the exception of Northern Ireland.
