Default Military Service in the U.K.

I thought this would be cool to ask since i served 4 years in the U.S. Navy back in the 1980's but how are the Armed Forces in the U.K. Is it the U.K. or Euro military in which they serve. Do the citizens support the Naval Bases or Air Force/Army bases in their local communities etc...?? I assume it's a 4 year stint like here in the states. I assume going AWOL will land you in the Brig (Military Jail) like here in the states ....lol....

I do remember we had a British Warship visit our Naval Base in Jacksonville, Florida back then as our ship (USS Sampson DDG-10) and the Brits had a barbecue cookout at the park there and we were surprised and envious...lol... that they allowed Alchohol on board the British Navy ships. Of course that was back in the 80's so maybe it's changed.

They serve in the UK military (aka the Armed Forces) - no Euro force as yet altho I don't doubt they'll try to create one someday. As far as the minimum length of service goes, I believe it's also four years. I think the bases are mostly supported as they usually provide a lot of employment locally, not to mention romantic opportunities.
