Yes, I'm afraid this topic may have come across as me being much more bothered by it than I am, lol. It does bother me a bit but I mainly brought it up just as an interesting topic of conversation and wanted to see if others have experienced the same thing.

Scottish female here living in the US.
My experience has been the opposite - I have had men watch their language around me in the States much more than I ever had at home. I even worked in an all-male environment where eventually those who knew me would tell newbies that "last isn't like women here - you can say anything in front of her".
I never found the door thing annoying either - just evidence of common courtesy. Much like a Brit will apologize when somebody steps on their toe! I found Canada to be much more mannered than my part of the States too.
On the other hand, I have noticed that American "feminism" is much more strident than the British version. There is a definite difference between the expectations of women on either side of the pond.

What can you expect?
I'm laughing over this thread because most of us men have dysfunctional brains, what with neither hemisphere speaking to the other, etc., so what can someone like PA2UK with a fully functioning mind expect? Give us credit for doing as well as we can, for heavens sake. Enough with making fun of our quirks and oddities - if you please. We were trained by our mothers to apologize for everything.
Btw, sorry if this reply offends anyone.

You should just accept it as a novelty. I'm sure they're not putting as much thought into it as you are, and I'm sure their intentions are not to be offensive. It seems manners and being polite is scarce these days, especially in younger generations...you should take it where you can get it!!

In my experience, the British people is the nicest and most polite I've ever met, and I've even had a few British men apologise for their "foul" language, and to be frank... I see nothing wrong with it. It is nice that some "politeness" has survived in this day and age of mostly rude language (even kids like me speak foul language ).
To me, it actually felt like they respected me more (not less) since they felt the need to apologize. Maybe I'm poor at judging people, I don't know But I do like old-fashioned behaviour
