May I remind you that England and Scotland basically have the same laws, but not what you speak of.

At least regarding the electrical part of it, the poster on the other forum may have been referring to Part P (http://www.eca.co.uk/IndustryGuidance/BuildingRegulations/PartP/index.asp - broken link) regulations.

Now, since this came into effect, there has been some discussion as to what "competent person" means; and it appears that they are now setting up some sort of official certification for "competent person." But the general consensus seems to be that a DIY person can basically add fixtures, such as lights or sockets to existing points or circuits, but they can not establish new electrical work in their home, unless thay can satisfy their local council that they are a "competent person."

By the way, Part P applies to England and Wales but does not apply to Scotland; or at least it didn't in 2007, when I left Scotland. No idea about NI.

Hmm interesting,I can see if you were gunna change your oil on your car or bike that, that would cause some concern for the council or the law due to some people just dumping the oil wherever they want and not in the necessary place's.
