I've stayed in a couple of Travelodge's in the UK and they both seemed pretty nice. Usually they're on the outskirts of a city, right by a major highway so you'd need a car to reach and leave one. They're cheaper, fairly comfortable, usually offer some kind of breakfast or are near a chain restaurant that does reasonable family fare. The UK also has Best Westerns and Holiday Inns if you wanted to try those.

Might want to check out some budget hotels right in London itself....the cost is a bit more, but the convenience factor may make up for it. www.imperialhotels.co.uk/default.aspx

They're good places to stay if you just want somewhere clean & modern to rest your head for the night. I've stayed at many a Travelodge....they are kind of like US motels, but less seedy

Travelodge hotels are great if you know what to expect...

I stay in them quite often when I go back to the UK, if you book in plenty of time you can get some amazing deals. My parents just stayed in a Travelodge in the Northeast for 9GBP a night -you can't beat that!

I find then newer the hotel, the better. I have stayed at the same hotel in Watford for a couple of years, every time I return the hotel looks more worn and just less "nice". I get the feeling that because the rooms are so cheap that maybe people don't look after the rooms as much as they would in a more expensive hotel.

The rooms are basic, but fine. There are no hairdryers in the rooms - you can borrow them at reception - however, they only have a certain amount and can run out.

One thing to watch out for, if you plan on staying on a Friday or Saturday night, try to avoid staying near a town center. I have spent many nights lying there, listening to drunken people returning to their rooms and being loud at 3am. You can't phone reception to complain, as you don't have a phone in the room!! You also quite often have to pay for parking.

As with everything in life - you get what you pay for.
