Actually, in the US states known as New England, people speak much more like the English. The use of "mum" is more frequent than "mom" and people talk about sitting on your "bum" which would never be heard in the US outside Massachusetts or some other parts of New England.

Theres also words from Scottish slang like "Ma" "Maw"

"Mum" is more commonly used though and "Mummy" in youngsters.

However I have never used "You'ins" or whatever it is that Pittsburghers are accused of saying. If I had ever said the word "You'ins" around my "Mum", I probably would have gone to bed without my supper.

I don't whether mum or mom came first, but just because English is originally from England doesn't mean the way they it was the way it was done first. There are many Americanisms which used to be the standard form in England, but independent innovatives arose in both countries. For instance most English people used 'Fall' until the 18th century, and it's still used in alot of rural areas in England.

Mum is used in Massachusetts, bum is used in Massachusetts. Massachusettes uses many words from the UK, after all it was settled originally by them. The UK says Mum.

I heard somewhere that the word for "mother" begins with the letter "m" in all languages.
I guess it excludes slang, and i haven't researched it widely, I can't even remember where I heard it !
Interesting, nonetheless.
