Move from HI to the UK
Hi There ~
I live on the island of Oahu, HI, and I'm a single mother with a 12 year old son. I really want to move to the UK by the end of 2010, but after reading some of the earlier posts, I'm not sure if its possible. I don't have a bachelors degree... only some college... most of my work experience is in Accounting. I am currently with the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii's Business Office as an Administrative Officer.
Life here is becoming more and more costly and stagnant. Not only has many state workers lost their jobs, but our Governor has also reduced the state workers pay by 7.5%. To make matters worse, our medical has also increased... I pay close to $450 a month for both my son and I. I feel like I'm going around in circles and getting no where. The education sucks and is not getting any better... I want more for my son, and if leaving Hawaii is what I need to do, then so be it.
Can someone, anyone please give me some advice as to how I can make this happen. I would greatly appreciate it =)

Without a high demand occupation or familial connection it is virtually impossible.
Why are you focussed on the UK? Have you looked into one of the other States on the mainland that may offer you more opportunity without requiring you to emigrate?

I haven't looked at any other states because I'm just over the US. My choices are: 1) UK, 2) Canada and 3) US. Having been employed with the University of Hawaii, I've met many people from other countries... I too have a friend that lives in Liverpool, born and raised. They are all so cultured, aspired to want more and be better, multilingual and brave that I figured why can't I do that for my son and myself =) I've also come across friends who have friends or family that either live there or have recently moved and absolutely love it!

 I'm pondering as well...
Why not Queensland? closer to Hawaii, similar weather, has the same queen as the UK, better beer... no culture, though.

Sorry for the confusion... I have a friend who lives in Liverpool, not that I want to live in Liverpool. I was thinking of places like Surrey, Sussex and/or Suffolk.

You simply won't qualify for a work visa. If one of your parents is a UK citizen or if you marry a British man you could do it.

Even with a bachelor's degree you're unlikely to find work in the UK if you're not a Uk citizen with right to abode. Use your U.S. citizenship and move to the mainland. Have you even given it a chance? There's far more people that, even today, migrate from the UK to the US than the other way around. How can you be 'over' the U.S. ? There's 50 states. If you're willing to make such a drastic move like go to the UK, why not consider Alaska. Or North Dakota? Nebraska? All those places right now hurt for qualified workers such as yourself, even in the recession. If you want something more 'worldly' or 'international' go to the big cities... albeit you'll be competing with a lot more people.
Medical in the UK? well, that's a controversial issue (whether it's quality or not), but more than likely you will not be afforded national medical services free of charge, since you are not a citizen.
IMHO, It's more than likely a pipe dream. BUT if it's not, I suggest a two-three week PMV (Pre-move visit). Live among the locals, go to the supermarket, check out the hospitals, government offices (post office, driver's licenses, etc), grocery stores. That'll be a great indicator of whether you can stand to live there or not.
Best of luck.
