The Christmas tree was introduced by Queen Victoria's husband, prince Albert, who was german. The German Christmas tree was originally a pagan object with a representation of a wood sprite or fairy, who lived in the tree.
This would not do at Christmas, of course, so has been replaced by the similar -appearing angel or, more simply, a star.

Henceforth, the top of my tree here in England will boast either a fairy ( I am thinking some years perhaps even a nice cardboard cut-out of DA-VID from Little Britain LOL) or . . . the Grinch!
