I will be working in Lancashire - a stones throw from the lake district and I want to know which city is better to live in - Liverpool or Manchester.
I am single and I enjoy art galleries, live music, eclectic independent shops and restaurants and a more bohemian atmosphere. I also enjoy cycling alot.
Whoa 3 hour commute! I would say Manchester because it's recently been regenerated (but possibly only in the centre?) and I know uni students who love it and say the night life is very good. Liverpool has always had a bad reputation but I've never been there so I can't comment.
I've been raised on souther propaganda about northern cities so I can't be much help, but I did like Manchester when I visited.
Try Google Maps. Lytham St Annes to Liverpool 1 hour 17 minutes drive. Manchester 1 hour 5 minutes. And that's without rush hour or road works. And the lakes are not exactly on your doorstep.
You could base yourself on the west coast mainline and travel in to your social life by rail, but that means living in Preston or Wigan; archetypal small northern industrial mill towns. Lancaster might be preferable. Southport could be a more genteel alternative to tacky kiss-me-quick Blackpool, and with good links to Liverpool.
You really need a more local forum with lots of Lancashire input.
What I meant by 3 hour commute is that according to google maps it says that using public transport it takes over 3 hours...never really occured to me that you would drive, but I assumed there would be a driect rail link which there may not be (google maps seems to give you a few buses), but clearly takes less time to drive if you're going to own a car. Cumbria isn't that close either, lovely part of the country but not really around the corner as such.
