I don't think it should be free, but it should definitely still be funded so the fare isn't ridiculously high. What about the people that can't afford cars? How would they get to work? People might say, save money to get a car. Well...how would they save money if they can't even get to their jobs in the first place? I live in the capital of NY (No, not NYC) and rely on public transit every day. Without it, I would be homeless. And lots of other people would be homeless as well. And then you would have a MUCH bigger problem on your hand!

Not to mention how even more crowded the highways would be if there was no longer any public transportation. Traffic would literally come to a stand still and almost everyone would not make it in time for work.

I love public transportation !!
I live in NJ, and hate driving into Hoboken or NYC, so I rely on NJ Transit - the best thing ever !!!!!

One problem is that much of PT serves low-density neighborhoods, which translates in to low ridership numbers. Once you account for FRRs, the cost per paid user per mile for these routes, regardless of mode of transit, is high. This creates an opportunity for PT naysayers to attack all PT because part of the system doesn't make sense. It's an inference that doesn't make sense, but it sounds convincing and turns more than a few opinions against future PT, even if the route in question would be appropriate.
