I used to work parts of the inner city in Phoenix and saw certain barrios destroyed for the purpose of urban renewal. I recently listened to an interview about the destruction of an 80 acre neighborhood called "la calle" in downtown Tucson during the 1960's. I think anyone interested in urban renewal, nieghborhood rights and the destruction of culture may find the free and commercial free interview interesting. Interesting stuff--I liked how she drew in other urban renewal projects that destroyed barrios, like Chavez Ravine (Dodger Stadium) in Los Angeles. One of my long-term projects is to write the full story of the redevelopment of my city's small but extremely diverse (mostly Japanese, Chinese, Black and Mexican) riverfront neighborhood. Hopefully I can get some original voices of that community recorded while they are still around--I have some from previous projects but there are always more stories.
