That is good to know. The last time I was there I went East from Downtown to University Circle on Euclid. It looks like Cleveland is really trying to bleed downtown into the good neighborhoods, and either eliminate those ghettos or redevelop them. I try to tell my folks about it, but they are indifferent (they're from Akron so go figure). Far as they're concerned Cleveland is still as bad as it was back in the 90s.

It could lead to an interesting planning discussion, though, because it's really exciting to see this area come back to life and a lot of that is the result of planning.
I took a business trip to Cleveland about 5 years ago and stayed near University Circle in the Glidden House. When I told friends where I was staying they were worried for my safety. My first day I took a walk around the lagoon and the museums and the whole area looked so forlorn. Also, there was a real problem with traffic patterns. I don't know if it was just a problem during my stay or if it was always bad, but I suspect that's an issue urban planners may have tackled as part of the improvement.
I'm hoping to get an opportunity to travel to Cleveland again in the near future because I really want to see the changes in this area.
I'm also a big fan of walking and hills--and the next time I'm in Cleveland I'm hoping there's a way to easily walk from University Circle to that really steep hill the goes up to Cleveland Heights. I think it's Cedar Road. If the planners for this project want an idea for a great urban exercise path, I'd suggest putting something here.

I thought Cleveland was completely flat until I checked out University Circle for myself. I really like it.

I think it has the potential to be, I actually think the west side is leading in terms of great underrated hoods in Cleveland (to people who aren't familiar with the city). Lots of potential and better transit options on the east side though.
I'd say the premier urban neighborhood in the midwest is probably Lincoln Park in Chicago. If you can afford it, other than that Wicker Park/Bucktown or Lakeview all day long.

Agreed that Lincoln Park, Wicker/Park Chicago is the best in the Midwest.
BUT for Cleveland, the think University Circle will be the clear winner by 2012...if it's not already.
