Brooklyn is a place where I think 1 in 4 people can trace ancestry to or something, so its always seen as a place of roots.

Really though, the main draw to NYC is Manhattan. Lesser extent Brooklyn, and thats pretty much it.

To the average person, whats in the Bronx besides Yankee Stadium and the zoo? Queens besides Citi Field?

Staten Island.... at all.

Its more about identity than actual attractions.
My point is that nobody does that for any other cities.

Take away the North Side of Chicago. It's garbage.

Take away Northeast San Francisco. It's garbage.

Take away Hollywood, Santa Monica, Koreatown, Downtown and Wilshire. LA is garbage.

Take away Center City. Garbage.

Take away Midtown Atlanta. Garbage.

The difference between NYC and all of those other places is that if you took away their "cores," they would truly be awful, lackluster cities, whereas NYC would still retain a lot of vibrancy. What NYC would have left is way better than what all of those other cities would have.

Probably because theres more fat to trim in NYC. Theres simply more undesirable places I guess. Not necessarily undesirable meaning poor or crime ridden, but places of no real interest.

I wouldnt say theyre garbage either, for the other cities, well, some, but mostly just areas of no interest or attraction.

North Philly yeah. Not all of the Southside of Chicago is garbage, etc.

Eh. I wouldnt call anything in SI or the Bronx desirable, on the whole. There are places, but nothing certainly head and shoulders above anything else youd find.

No ones paying $500 or $800 airfare to come from around the world to see the Bronx, SI or most of Brooklyn or Queens. Its all basically Manhattan.

Its not to say thats all there is, but the attractions in the outer boroughs is limited.

Even North Philly isnt all garbage.

Some of the most rapidly gentrifying areas in the city actually

I wouldnt call Fairmont, No Libs, Fishtown, Brewerytown, Francesville Garbage though there absolutely some just awful areas of North Philly (as bad as anyplace in the us quite frankly)

I mean here is just one thing going into Fishtown along with the many artists, restaurnats, bars and new housing invading weekly

Fishtown gets first look at proposed Canal Street North project - Philly.com

Or Vetri and Starr expanding into North Broad; even Blatstein is looking to create a large complex on North Broad

Yes because those are parts of those cities that give them their appeal and desirability.

Remove Manhattan and New York is a city with 6 million people, but only 1 fortune 500 company.

Where pray tell will all these people work? Companies are not going to flock to Brooklyn because they would rather be in Northern NJ or Connecticut.

These are places that border CC though. Theyre very close in proximity. In talking N Philly, I mean N Philly.

Pretty much. This is the point, and not one I disagree with.

Like I said, much more fat to trim.

Manhattan is just 1/5th of the city of 8 million, and its by far the most desirable. The other 4/5ths have very little in comparison, but the bulk of the population.
