Default Flying is the worst form of transportation imaginable

Between the airsickness, bad food (if it is even offered), cramped seats, poor customer service, endless delays and cancellations, having to remove your shoes at the security gate and who knows what other items of clothing, being felt up and degraded by a bunch of power-mad TSA agents, flying in the US has become a form of sadomasochism and torture.

But people are still largely opposed to high-speed rail? Go figure.

Because it's fast. Then again, I've stopped flying to LA and just drive. That's more to do with the TSA than the actual flying. Once you get through the red tape, flying is a breeze.

I'm definitely for high speed rail but if it was the preferred method of travel, I would imagine TSA style security checks would inevitably be required. But I'm with you, high speed rail is the future, especially considering the increasing inflation of gas prices
.

i think that the cost per mile of setting up a 21st century rail system is more than we can afford.
i travel in japan, people bus alot bek of the huge difference in cost. the bullet train is very expensive. the bus method is used extensively in mexico as well, again, for cost reasons. whenever i hear talk of high speed rail i smell a pork barrel project headed my way.

Why would TSA style checks "inevitably" be required? If we want to ride the slippery slope, why aren't TSA checks required for everyone getting on the freeway? How do I know your car isn't packed with explosives, after all?

It's not like you can fly a train into a building.

In Japan, Spain, China, and other places with high-speed rail, trains have a maximum of around 300km/h, or 186mph. To put that into perspective, a train averaging 175mph could travel from New York to DC in around one hour and nine minutes, less than half the current Acela time.

Average speed is always slower than maximum speed. I don't think any high speed rail route averages 175 mph; Madrid - Barcelona is 147 mph, other high speed rail lines a bit slower.

Rail lines should be rated for average speed rather than maximum speed. Acela has a maximum speed of 150 mph, faster than some British high speed rail lines, but it only reaches that speed briefly. It's irrelevant to the passenger.
