Not to everyone's taste and captures only a specific feeling, but this is a song I'd listen to with headphones on the subway or walking around. It sounds ominous but feels to me more atmospheric. It's long enough that I can hook into that feeling:

When you've gotten yourself used to the vibe, this kind of loping song reminds me most of day after day city life:

As someone who has adopted Youngstown as my hometown, and since I don't like pierogies or Briar Hill pizza, I feel obligated to like Bruce Springstein's "Youngstown."

Don't like pierogi?

I've never heard of such a thing!

Kind of dated and completely off the beaten path, but a pretty good soul song that, living in a concrete-jungle Chicago neighborhood, I can still relate to:

Dirty Old Town (Ewan McCall, but covered by a lot of people)

Dirty Water

We Gotta Get Out of this Place (Yardbirds)

Quite a few by Simon and Garfunkel:

Bleeker Street
Sounds of Silence
At the Zoo

Laura Nyro had some good songs with city settings:

Gibsom Street
Black Patch
New York Tendaberry

"You Look Like A City/
But feel like Religion/
To me"

...From New York Tendaberry. Nice sentiment there! I can relate!

Jerry Garcia has a good city song:

Mission in the Rain (which is a reference to the Mission District in San Francisco):

There's some satisfaction/
in the San Francisco rain/
No matter what comes down
the Mission always looks the same/

Come again/
Walking along in the Mission in the rain/
Come again/
Walking along in the Mission in the rain/

....sure there are a few more out there. These are the ones that come to mind.

I absolutely love that song. My favorite Springsteen song. So haunting!

on edit upthread folks posted stuff from that Born to Run LP. Yes, agree, some good city-themed songs there...good call.
