Google has a cool feature that uses Landsat images taken annually for the last 20-years (1984-2012). You can drag and zoom to any land based point on earth though it might take a minute to clear up so that it doesn't look too blurry.
One of the most fascinating changes to watch are the cities. Here is the change Las Vegas went through;
I glanced around a few metros and the most common noticeable changes are;
Airport expansions
Road and Freeway repavings
New construction/renovation with white buildings - Cities along the I-95 corridor make a subtle change from dark grey to white, evidence of gentrification?
Increasing sprawl - It's more rapid in Sun Belt cities but quite a lot can still be seen in Midwestern and Rust Belt cities, smaller metros especially.
What are some changes you notice in your own metro or hometown? Does your city have a lot of activity or is it more or less the same as it was 20 years ago?
Kind of cool. Not too much change here in my little town, you can see when they built the new schools a few years ago, and put in the bypass, but not much else. Other than the which fields each of the farmers rotate through over the course of a couple years.
Yeah, I just spent WAY too much time dragging it around the US to see different area and how they have changed. It is a VERY cool link. My first impression was, so-so, but after playing with it for a bit, it has gotten kind of addicting to see how different cities have changed.
I was looking for something like this a few days ago to see when a few changed around here were done and this is perfect for that.
