I think roundabouts are more effective and safer the traffic lights. They also keep from your car sitting idle for up to few minutes at a long stop light. Only problem is I've seen too many idiots almost cause accidents in roundabouts because they don't understand the terms yield or speed limit.....

The problem I see with roundabouts is when one route has such a heavy flow that there is never a break in traffic. this happens where a roundabout is placed after a very long (multi mile) stretch of road with nothing to break traffic flow. Especially at rush hour you get a long line of traffic evenly spaced. If the second most traveled road enters to the right of the main line people can be stuck as the continious flow down the mainline just keeps coming, and coming, and coming.

The second problem is drivers that believe in the 'My car/truck is bigger than yours' method of determining who should yield. I have found dump trucks to be the worst offenders of this in our area, especially when they are on their way home at the end of the day.

I was wondering about effectiveness at higher volume. I navigate the Long Beach traffic circle pretty well, but though it's usually way busier than the picture I linked it's still relatively low flow. If the traffic tripled I'm not so sure how well it would work.

they're a good deal safer than most other types of intersections. They can reduce the crash rate by up to 50% and they eliminate t-bone crashes which are the cause of most fatalities in traditional 4-way intersections.
